Abstract

This study aims to explore the transformation of Islamic Religious Education based on local culture in the digital era and its impact on student engagement and understanding. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Grati using a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation analysis. The results of the study indicate that the transformation of learning has occurred in several key aspects. First, there is a transformation in the use of learning media, shifting from conventional lecture methods to the utilization of digital media such as locally-based cultural learning videos, interactive presentations, and online learning platforms. Second, there is a transformation in learning strategies, where teachers have begun to apply contextual approaches by linking Islamic Religious Education materials with local cultural practices such as religious traditions, community activities, and local wisdom values, which are packaged into digital project-based assignments. Third, there is a transformation in the pattern of learning interaction, moving from teacher-centered to student-centered learning through online discussions, interactive quizzes, and digital collaboration. Fourth, there is a transformation in assessment methods, where evaluation is not only based on written tests but also includes project-based assessment, digital presentations, and student reflections. The integration of local cultural elements such as traditions, values, and community practices into digital learning platforms has been shown to increase students’ interest in learning and strengthen their contextual understanding of Islamic teachings. In addition, the use of interactive digital media aligned with local wisdom is able to create more meaningful and relevant learning experiences for Generation Z. Although there are challenges such as limited digital literacy among educators and limited resources, this transformation shows positive results in strengthening students’ character and religious understanding. Therefore, the integration of digital innovation with local cultural values is essential in developing Islamic education that is both adaptive and culturally grounded in the modern era.
